Trey Bridwell runs away with Powerade Greenville County Amateur Former Blue Ridge golfer wins by record 11 shots.... In most years things are tight and tense on the back nine of the Powerade Greenville County Am. Today it wasn't who was going to win, it was by how much. Greer Country Club's Trey Bridwell followed his spectacular 2nd round 66 - the low round of the tournament, with a more than solid 69 - a score that was matched by only one more golfer in the field, Herbie Sargent's opening round. By the time he calmly rolled in a 14 foot birdie on the difficult 17th hole, his lead reached double digits. His 8 under par total of 208 was 11 shots ahead of former Clemson golfer Zack Siefert and Furman golfer & 2006 County Am champion Garland Ferrell. Siefert had the 2nd low round of the day with a 71. In 4th place was Thornblade's Todd Hendley, Summersett's Mikey Hartin, and 2002 Champion Jeremy Revis. Two-time champ Bobby Hines (1996 & 1998) tied Summersett's David Ellington at 5 over 221. Terry Willis, Stephen Kirven, and Jeff Jaeggi rounded out the top ten. Bridwell won a gift certificate, a crystal trophy, and posession at Greer Country Club for the next year the Leon Gravley Memorial Cup. Bridwell was excited about his victory. "First of all those guys I played against are great players and super nice guys. That makes this even more meaningful, because those are some of the best players in the Upstate. Getting my name on that trophy alongside all those great names is a lifetime achievement. This is such a great tournament and I am honored to win it." At the conclusion of the tournament, Bob Murray was inducted into the Greenville County Golf Hall of Fame. Also Thornblade was awarded the Grady Allison Cup for the next year for winning the County Team title over the first 36 holes. On another note, the golfers in the tournament brought in 2739 new & used golf balls to give to the kids at The First Tee of Greenville. Dunlop Golf has agreed to match that total with new golf balls. Tournament Director Robbie Gravley also thanked Powerade for their involvement in the tournament, stating that the tournament will be able to give "significant" funds to The First Tee because of the excellent participation of the golfers, and especially from the partnership with Powerade. The tournament committee wishes to thank all the players and fans that came out to Verdae Greens this weekend for the 41st Annual Powerade Greenville County Amateur. The course & staff at Verdae were fantastic. The golf was great and we did some good things for The First Tee. The players and committee also pass along condolences to the family of Cathead Stroud and to Dillard Pruitt and family in the recent loss of Fran Pruitt. Herbie Sargent fired a three under par 69 on Friday in the 1st round of the Powerade Greenville County Amateur at Verdae Greens Golf Club to take a one shot lead. Sargent leads Furman golfer Austin Reeves by a single shot after a hot day on the course where golfers saw the already slick greens speed up as the day wore on. The duo, who both played in the morning wave of golfers, were the only two players to break par. David Ellington, Steven Kirven, Blaine Rogers, Jeff Jaeggi, along with two-time champ Bobby Hines were able to match par 72. Trey Bridwell, 2006 champion Garland Perrell, Ellis McNeely, Zach Seifort, and Bill Smith had 73's. Ten golfers came in at 74, including former winner Chris Eassy and defending champion Tim Garrett. The tournament continues on Saturday beginning at 7:30 AM. After Saturday's round, the field will be cut to the low 92 scores & ties. On Friday, there were 93 players who shot 80 or better, making the committee's projected cut line at 161. Also concluding on Saturday will be the Allison Cup Team Competition, currently held by Summersett. The golfers are bringing their old golf balls on Saturday & Sunday as a contribution to the kids at The First Tee of Greenville. The tournament goal is 3000 golf balls. Pre-Tournament Story  The 2008 version of the Greenville County Amateur is all set to begin, not only on the new Champion bermudagrass greens at Verdae Greens Golf Club, but with a new name as well. Powerade, from the Coca-Cola brands beverage family, has joined the Greenville County Golf Association as a partner in the flagship event of the Association, the Greenville County Amateur Championship. The 41st edition of the Upstate's oldest and most prestigious event will now be called the Powerade Greenville County Amateur. Greenville County Director Robbie Gravley is thrilled to have Powerade as part of the team. "Oh, this is a wonderful day for us all. The partnership will enhance the tournament in a lot of ways, not just from being able to offer the players more, but to give the County Amateur the opportunity to give back to the community through the Greenville Chapter of the First Tee. Hopefully we can be an asset to Powerade as well. I would love to see this partnership to grow into a wonderful friendship over the next four years, so by that time we just can't do without each other." The tournament kicks off at 7:30 A.M. on Friday July 18. The tee times will run from 7:30 to 9:20, and from 12:30 until 2:20 Friday & Saturday with 184 players. After Saturday's round, the field will be cut to the low 92 scores & ties. Play will start at 8:00 on Sunday off of #1 tee. The defending champion is Tim Garrett from Fox Run Country Club. Garrett won last year's event at Greer Country Club, but as usual will find a tough and talented field of players. The tournament returns to Verdae for a second time. In 1999 newcomer Matt Wills burst on the Greenville County scene to edge Clemson golf star Ben Duncan on Sunday's back nine. Gravley says Verdae Greens will be a challenging test. "I was just at the course today. It is in beautiful condition. We won't have to touch the ball, and the greens are rolling great. One green had an issue last month, but it will be re-opened next Wednesday and will be very nice. I can't wait for another great event!"
