Trey Bridwell wins 43rd County Am!

Trey Bridwell shot a solid one under par 71 on Sunday to follow up his 68 on Saturday to win the 43rd Greenville County Amateur at beautiful Green Valley. Bridwell won two years ago at Verdae Greens by a record 11 shots, but didn't find this victory quite the walk in the park. He had to hold off three former champs and a new kid on the block this time. Whit Suber, Jeremy Revis, & defending champion Chris Wilkins all posted under par rounds on Sunday to make things interesting, but it was rising high school senior Cory Taylor who battled Bridwell to the final hole. Taylor's 68 in the sweltering heat was the low round Sunday and got him right into the thick of things.

In fact, the two were tied for a much of the back nine until Bridwell birdied the par 4 15th hole. Playing in the group ahead, Taylor birdied the par 3 17th to knot things up again. The tie was broken within minutes though, as Bridwell hit his own approach to 17 within six feet and rolled in the go-ahead putt. Taylor had a chance with a 20 footer on 18 but missed, then Bridwell, needing just a two putt from 15 feet, cuddled his birdie try within inches and tapped in for his 2nd County Am championship. His four under par 212 total will send the Leon Gravley Memorial Cup back to Greer Country Club for the next 12 months.

Wilkins, who made a 9 on the par four 1st hole on Saturday, finished at one over par 217 and tied for third with Yancey Johnson, who's three under 69 on Sunday moved him up the leaderboard for his best ever County Am finish. Former winners Suber and Revis, along with Erik Martin and current South Carolina State Mid-Amateur champion Marcus Grumbles, tied for 5th at 218. In the 1st Flight, 2004 Champ Chris Eassy finished strong with a 70 to take that honor, while 17 year old Joshua Chay posted a 69 to win the 2nd Flight. The top eight finishers earned the automatic right to represent Greenville County in the Cyder Cup Matches this fall at River Falls against a team from Spartanburg County.

In the Allison Cup team competition, Holly Tree successfully defended their title against the 15 club teams who had at least the three neccessary players to compete, and will retain the Allison Cup for another year. Summersett had another traditional strong finish, taking 2nd, while the host club, Green Valley took third place.

Thank you to Green Valley Country Club, our sponsors: Pepsi and Adidas, the news media for all the excellent coverage, all the volunteer tournament committee and staff, and especially the players, who make the Greenville County Amatuer Championship one of the premier amateur golf tournaments in the State each and every year.

Congratulations to our 2010 Greenville County Amatuer champion...TREY BRIDWELL!
